Is There a Youth Mental Health Crisis in America?

Often in my conversations with adults, they are shocked to hear the words youth and mental health crisis in the same sentence. Yes, there is a youth mental health crisis in America.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately one in six youth between the ages of 6 and 17 experienced a mental health disorder in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated this crisis, with increased rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders among youth. A survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the percentage of youth with suicidal thoughts or ideation increased significantly during the pandemic. Additionally, there is a shortage of mental health professionals and resources in many areas of the country, making it difficult for youth to access the care they need.

It is important for policymakers, healthcare providers, and the public to recognize and address the youth mental health crisis in America to ensure that young people receive the support and care they need to thrive. In February 2023, some of our youth from the OTS (Off the Streets and Onto the Set) program were invited to lead a mental health panel at Our Youth Our Future Foundation Inc.'s H.O.P.E Youth Summit.
